Academic Standards
The Middle School is the 'stepping stone' between the Junior and Senior Schools and provides a wide array of opportunities for every pupil. Building on the academic foundations laid down in the Junior School, the curriculum is broad and varied for pupils to experience different subject areas and activities.
Specialist subject teachers teach Middle School pupils for the majority of their lessons in form rooms. Other subjects such as Science, Music, Art, ICT and Food and Design Technology are delivered in specialist rooms. There are opportunities to experience competitive Sport and the PE & Games department make full use of the facilities available to them, including an all weather pitch.
Academic focus is balanced between the core subjects of English, Maths and Science alongside the other Common Entrance subjects: Geography, History, French and RS. Latin is introduced at the beginning of Year 6 for the majority of the pupils. Homework is the three core subjects as well as weekly French vocabulary testing and reasoning practice. This continues until just before the end of the first half term in Year 6 when a full range of Common Entrance subjects introduce a single weekly homework. English spelling and French & Latin vocabulary are also set on a weekly basis.
The children continue with streams in Years 5 & 6 through parallel A and B classes. Further differentiation also occurs in Maths with both streams being set into ability groups. Provision for SEN and Gifted & Talented Children is also made.
