Do I have to book to attend a personal tour or an Open Day?

To book a personal tour of our school, you will need to contact Sarah Concanon, our Admissions Registrar on 01372 372311, or by email on admissions@downsend.co.uk. She will be happy to arrange a date and time convenient to you.

You do not need to book to attend any of our Open Days or Drop in Mornings. You are very welcome to just turn up on the day.

Do I have to visit the school before I apply/register my child?

We strongly recommend you come along to an Open Day or have a private tour of the school as this will give you a thorough insight into the school and whether it is the right place for your child.  We can also help you to make this important decision by answering any questions that may arise as you become more familiar with our school.

Should we bring our son/daughter with us when we visit the school?

This varies depending on the individual situation.   Some parents prefer to see the school themselves first so that they can make an informed decision about whether to proceed further with the application process without the influence of an excited child! They then return for a second tour with the child.  Others bring the whole family and explore the school together so that everyone is involved in the decision.  Valuable questions and different viewpoints tend to arise when parents and child are together, which can be answered and discussed thoroughly.

How do I book an assessment and/or a Taster Day for my child?

Once we have received the completed Registration form for your child, together with the £75.00 fee, our Admissions Registrar will contact you to book your child on to the next scheduled assessment day. Please note that children applying for places in Year One or below at our Pre-Preps will not need to be assessed.

What should we do to prepare our son/daughter for the assessments?

There is no specific revision pupils can do for the assessment tests. The best advice is to reassure them that they are not designed to catch them out. They should relax and try to answer them to the best of their ability.

What happens if I register my son/daughter and then don’t take up the place if offered, do I get my registration fee back?

No. The registration fee is non-refundable and covers any administration costs as well as assessments and taster days, if appropriate.

When do you notify families about admissions decisions?

Usually we write to you within 4/5 working days, in some instances sooner than this.

How are admissions decisions made?

Most children visit us for a “Taster Day” which gives them a chance to experience life at Downsend first-hand and to meet their peer group and the teachers.   During this day, your child will have some English and Maths assessments.  Accompanying school reports and other information are also taken into account.  The Headmaster takes all these into consideration before an offer is made.  The Headmaster’s decision is final.

How do I secure my offer of a place at Downsend?

Complete and return the enclosed Acceptance of Place form to our Admissions Registrar, as soon as it is sent to you, together with the requested deposit.
