A Bit of Downsend Sporting History
02 December 2011
We were recently contacted by a wonderful gentleman called Henry Macdonald, who was a pupil at Downsend during the 1950’s. He was clearing out his loft and came across his old Downsend football shirt, which he ‘proudly wore as left-back for the school soccer team of 1953 (played 11, won 10, drawn 1).’ He has kindly sent the shirt to us, because he wanted it to go to a good home and where better than where it came from!
He remembers Downsend fondly and ‘the happy times he had at school.’ His brother also came to Downsend, and he is still in touch with one of his contemporaries from his school days here, who remains a close friend.
The shirt is in beautiful condition, and we plan to have it framed and displayed in a suitable location in the School. In the meantime, what better way to bring it to life than with a photograph of one of our current pupils wearing it! You will see that it is a little different to the soccer shirts of today!
He still has a photo of the soccer team and of the rugby team of 1954 (played 9, won 7, lost 2) and is kindly sending us some copies of these too.
