Academic Success in 2012
We have already received our first 13+ Scholarship Award for September 2012. Claire Hunt in Year 8 has been awarded a Ragg Scholarship to Reigate Grammar School. This is an all-rounder award, and a small number are available for pupils who show potential in at least two extra-curricular areas. Claire, who is not in the Scholarship group, was given this award for talent in both drama and sport. She also performed well in the academic papers. This is an extremely prestigious award, so well done to Claire.
The diversity and excellence of our results is most impressive. In the 2011 pre-tests, 90 of our Year 6 pupils were offered 13+ places at senior schools for September 2013, subject to passing Common Entrance. 46 were offered places to St John’s, 32 were offered places to Epsom College, with a further 12 pupils securing 13+ offers to other schools, including CLFS, the Royal Grammar School and Tonbridge.
In 2011, our Year 8 (13+) pupils secured no less than ten Academic Awards, six All-Rounder Awards, five Sport Awards, four Art Awards and one Music Award, with a further seven pupils excused Common Entrance on the strength of their papers. The only two academic scholarships awarded by Epsom College both went to Downsend pupils and the top academic scholarship at the Royal Grammar School in Guildford was also awarded to a Downsend boy. These pupils follow in the Downsend tradition of gaining a wide range of scholarships to some of the top senior schools. The Common Entrance results have also been exceptional, with a 100% pass rate yet again and our highest ever percentage of A & B grades at 85%. Well done to all of you.
Scholarship Awards
33 Scholarship Awards/excused CE on basis of scholarship exams were achieved in 2011 as well as 100% pass rate at Common Entrance. Results for 2011 are shown below. Well done to all our pupils!
