Pre-Test Success

Year 6 pupils continue to have success in their applications to senior schools and it is worth noting the following:

There are 73 firm offers to a 1st or 2nd choice 13+ school
There are 28 firm offers to a 1st or 2nd choice 11+ school

Over 300 children sat the CLFS tests for approximately 20 places in Year 7 and another 20 in Year 9. Downsend pupils secured approximately 30% of the 13+ places and 33% of the 11+ places.

Most of our Year 8 Scholarship group have just completed their exams, with results due shortly. So far our pupils have been awarded the following Scholarships:

Art Scholarship to Manor House School
Music Exhibition to Harrow School
Netball Scholarship to Surbiton High School
Music Scholarship to Trinity School
Academic Scholarship to Reigate Grammar School
Two Sports Scholarships to Reigate Grammar School

A full list of scholarship offers will follow in due course.

First Scholarship Award for 2013

Rosie Miller, in Year 8, has been awarded an Art Scholarship to St. Teresa’s School. Rosie is clearly a very talented artist, who has been working extremely hard and attending extra art lessons. She was given this award for her observational drawing test and an art portfolio, which included a range of imaginatively developed work showing flair and skill. Her endeavours have been justly rewarded – well done Rosie!

Music Exhibition Awarded

Year 8 boy, George Grassly, has been awarded a Harrow School Music Exhibition. George is a very talented musician who plays both the oboe and piano to a very high level. He is also a strong member of school choirs and orchestras. Well done George!

In the next few weeks, a number of our Year 8 students will sit scholarship exams for 13+ entry to RGS Guildford, Epsom College, St. John’s School, City of London Freemen’s School and Winchester College. Final preparations are underway and I am confident that they will perform extremely well. I will keep you informed of our results once they are announced.

Academic Success in 2012

Year 8 pupils at Downsend School in Leatherhead are currently celebrating a highly impressive set of Common Entrance results. Not only has the school once again achieved a 100% pass rate, with every child securing a place at their preferred school, but the pupils also achieved nearly 80% A & B grades. This is in addition to pupils securing 34 Scholarship Awards to local schools including City of London Freemen’s, Epsom College and St John’s, as well as further afield to schools such as Sevenoaks and Woldingham.

Floyd Steadman, Headmaster at the school, remarked ‘These results are outstanding and the breadth of our pupils’ success is a testament to the engaging and varied curriculum which we provide. However, as well as academic development and success, it is also important to us that we encourage our pupils to become well-rounded and confident individuals, ready to face the challenges and opportunities presented to them at their next school.’

Mr Steadman added, ‘These latest results add to the school’s recent achievements in the Year 6 pre-tests for schools such as St John’s and Epsom College. Over 70 confirmed offers to senior schools have been made to our Year 6 pupils for 13+ places, in a year where demand for places has been exceptionally competitive, with large numbers applying. I am extremely proud of all our children and their successes.’

These latest academic achievements coincide with the U11 Boys’ Freestyle Relay Team being crowned National Champions at the ESSA Primary Team Championships National Finals in Sheffield last weekend.

Scholarship Awards

34 Scholarship Awards were achieved in 2012, with a further 8 pupils excused CE on the basis of their scholarship exams. There was also a 100% pass rate at Common Entrance with nearly 80% A & B grades. Results are shown below. Well done to all our pupils!
