Reading for Awards
Posted on 01 April 2011 in Library Blog by Louise Ellis- Barrett
Whilst I regularly are encourage reading through the system of awards and recognition it is important that we give those who write and illustrate the books some recognition too and this is why there are awards galore for them. In fact the number of Book Award schemes has grown considerably in the last few years but there is one which remains the most coveted and that is the Carnegie and Greenaway awards. The Carnegie ia an award for teenage and young fiction whilst the Greenaway is for picturebooks and younger children, this one being awarded to an illustrator. The shortlist for this year, revealed today provides an excellent selection of reading, thought-provoking, funny and even gruesome books feature on the Carnegie list whilst the Greenaway list sparkles with classic stories, traditional ideas and some wonderful reading enjoyment. We will shaow these awards with our reading groups in school, deciding which books we like the best but if you too are interested in reading something a little different then perhaps look at the website for a list of titles or think about the couple I recommend here. The website address for anyone interested is www.carnegiegreenaway.org.uk For older readers I can strongly recommend The Death Defing Pepper Roux by Geraldine McCaughrean and for younger readers The Heart and the Bottle by Oliver Jeffers or perhaps April Underhill, Tooth Fairy by Bob Graham. Whatever choice you make enjoy the book and let me know your thoughts!
