Vision and Values

“While academic results are celebrated at Downsend, they are not revered. It is important that our children achieve success as they define it, play hard, and discover and develop their strengths from the remarkable breadth of opportunity.”  Mr. Watts, Deputy Head

Vision

Our aim for every child

We want children to leave Downsend kind, confident, happy, polite citizens, prepared socially and academically for their transition to a wide range of chosen senior schools, ambitious to embrace the opportunities around them.

Values

How we make this happen

Passionate

Excellent teachers open doors in children’s minds at Downsend because they show passion and huge knowledge of their specialist subject. They create hands- on learning experiences that make lessons memorable and fun; they inspire and bring out the best in pupils they teach.

Dynamic

There are no barriers to what children can achieve here but talent and hard work. We encourage positive, go above and beyond attitudes through a curriculum that sets high academic standards and extra-curricular activities that deliver a vast programme of enrichment in the Creative Arts and Sport. There is every opportunity to reach for the stars!

Caring

We think big: extensive ICT Suite, brand new Sports Pavilion, three science labs, four football pitches… but we feel personal and intimate. We look after each other at Downsend. Our pastoral care is focused on helping the whole child; we make sure everyone always has someone to turn to whether that’s a teacher, Peer Mentor, House Captain, Playground or dedicated Shoelace Monitor.

And the Spirit of Downsend Award goes to….

We are always on the look-out for the pupils each year who display the values at the heart of our school.  Hard work, relentless pursuit of goals, going beyond, contributing selflessly to school life, doing your very best, taking responsibility… extra special achievements are fully recognised and celebrated in the summer at Prize Giving.
