We are a mixed ability school, however, we assess children before offering a place to determine their current academic level. We do this through short tests in English and Maths.
For children joining in Year 3 we have two Assessment days:
- Wednesday 22 November
- Saturday 20 January
In November, children sitting for entry will come into school to complete some short assessments in English and Maths so that we can see where their strengths lie. Later on the same day, we invite them to an exciting activity afternoon where the children can participate in some fun activities and become familiar with the Downsend environment.
Prior to the January Assessment day, children are invited in to school for an ‘Introduction Morning’, where the children meet our Head, Ian Thorpe and Head of Lower School, Clare Kirkham. They then participate in a fun treasure hunt, searching for clues around school. Parents are welcome to stay for tea and coffee and are invited to join in too.
For children joining in other years or at different times during the year, they will be invited for an Assessment Day. As part of this day, following the assessment tests, your child will be allocated a ‘buddy’ and spend the remainder of the day with a class in their current Year group as a taster experience.
If you would like your child to attend an Assessment day for Downsend, please do register with us.
We do not formally ‘assess’ children joining us at First Steps and Rising Reception and once you have accepted a place with us, we work with you to settle in your little one as part of their transition.
We do like to meet children registering for Reception and Year 1 in order for us to assess the mutual fit between school and family. It is important we can help each child attain their full potential and so we arrange an ‘Introduction Morning’ following which, we provide feedback and have a discussion with you.
After your registration, Sarah Concanon will automatically be in touch to arrange this ‘Introduction Morning’.
