Jon Albert – Assistant Head (Enrichment)
As we reach the end of the summer term, we are sad to be saying “Good Bye” to some of our wonderful staff and one of them is Mr Albert, who is leaving Downsend after 7 years at the school. Mr Albert was a very valuable member of staff who injected passion for sports into many youngsters.
Thank you Mr Albert for being such an inspirational teacher to so many and of course, we couldn’t let you go without asking you about your time at Downsend.
Thank you so much for being an amazing and inspirational teacher, we wish you all the best and we will miss you.
My first day at Downsend was slightly overwhelming as I tried to understand the complexities of the two school sections and the pre preps. I quickly realised that was going to take some time, and in fact, with the constant changes, still requires attention to date! Early on, however, it was very clear how caring and supportive the staff were and that the children loved their school!
How much Downsend has changed since then?
Downsend has undergone so many changes during my time at the school. There are the obvious cosmetic changes of uniform, classroom renovations and of course the exciting new Creative Arts Centre, but more importantly, it has evolved to meet the demands of the independent school sector. The ethos of the school remains very strong, but its educational philosophy has changed, providing a unique model in high demand. Its focus on teaching and learning has improved considerably under the guidance of Clare Kirkham and Karl Newland and I have no doubt it will continue to develop into a local school of choice under Ian Thorpe’s visionary lead.
What are your favourite memories from your time at Downsend?
I have experienced many brilliant memories at Downsend including numerous exciting sporting tournament wins- If I was to select one memory it would be attending the Cognita Ski Trip with an amazing group of children and staff.
What will you miss most about Downsend?
Downsend has an unbelievable staff body who have shone over the last couple of years. During these challenging times, the staff have gone above and beyond throughout, and as a colleague and parent, I could not be more impressed. I will miss working with these colleagues (and friends) immensely, but also the children, who impress me all the time with their can-do attitudes!
Any exciting plans for the months and years ahead?
To return as a parent and enjoy the school from the other side of the fence.
A fun fact we might not know about you and you can’t leave without telling us?!
