Our Lower School offers every opportunity for children to try new skills in Sport, Music and the Creative Arts. Hidden talents don’t stay hidden for long!
Alongside the Downsend day, we have a dynamic extra-curricular programme of activity.
There are a wide range of clubs running both at lunchtimes and after school, with a balance of creative, active and thought-provoking activities on offer each day. Clubs typically include Science, Pottery, Chess, Drama, Spanish, Theatre, Dance, Electronics and Yoga, amongst others. Sports clubs include Athletics, Badminton, Cricket, Hockey, Soccer and Tennis.
Sport is immensely popular at Downsend, with many opportunities for children of all abilities to have a go at a competitive sport, representing school or their house. We encourage all pupils to take part and find as many opportunities as possible for them to ‘have a go’.
Downsend is a community school providing opportunities for children to extend their talents in Sport and the Creative Arts.
We are the Surrey Cricket Development & Performance Centre, the new home of the Ashtead All-Stars (Netball).
Our own football coach runs the Josh Evans Football Academy in the evenings and at the weekend and there are plans to develop Hockey, Music, Drama & Dance Academies along similar lines, affording Downsend pupils and children from the surrounding area every opportunity to hone their skills.
Music has grown enormously at Downsend and pupils can choose to play musical instruments and can book weekly lessons with our peripatetic music teachers. Many of our pupils join our School Choirs or Orchestras.
We run a Drama Club putting on at least two major productions in the course of the academic year.
Lamda lessons are available to children from Year 2 onwards. The children look at poetry, prose and Drama and will focus on improvisation and story-telling as well as characterisation, mime, physical theatre and voice work.
The majority of school trips are educational, enriching the children’s studies. Recent outings have included trips to Windsor Castle, the Globe Theatre, Port Lympne Zoo, the Tate Modern, Portsmouth Naval Dockyard, West End Theatres and the Imperial War Museum.
Residential trips include an overnight stay at the High Ashurst Activity Centre, in Year 4 of the Lower School. Holiday opportunities include an annual Ski Trip for Year 5 pupils upwards and a Chamber Choir Tour, in 2017 to Bruges, for Year 4 pupils upwards.
