Computing

Aim

To enable young pupils of all abilities to develop their ‘Computational thinking’ skills, and enjoy becoming confident participants in the digital world, by using a wide range of resources.

Curriculum

Children are given many opportunities to use information technology, recognising common uses of computing at and beyond school. They are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly.

The Lower School children embark on their journey of becoming digitally literate by learning the correct finger positions and work on improving their typing accuracy and speed.

By exploring various programs, the pupils purposefully start using technology to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital data.

Year 2 and Year 3 are introduced to publishing and by combining words, pictures, sounds and effects they create their first simple stories and animations.

In Year 4 and Year 5, the pupils learn to combine graphics and text, creating well-presented documents for everyday use. They also use search technologies effectively, helping them to independently research and manipulate digital information in order to prepare and present their work in other subjects.

Programming is an area of the Computing Curriculum that our pupils study in great depth and with much enthusiasm, as it helps to develop their intellectual curiosity, problem-solving skills and collaborative work.  The younger pupils have tremendous fun learning to Code by using drag-and drop programming and create and debug their first simple programs. They explore interactive programming software, both on the computer and on tablets, and control floor robots, which helps develop their understanding of logical reasoning and sequential language. Year 4 and Year 5 pupils take part in technologically enhanced learning by using interactive programming resources and tutorials available via the web. Through Computing lessons, they become members of the world-wide programming community, regularly completing ‘The Hour of Code’. We encourage all of our pupils to further practise their coding skills at home and at break time, when the Computer Suites are available for their use.
