Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-Curricular Activities

French lessons are part of the weekly timetable for all our pupils.

Swimming lessons are also part of the weekly time table for the children in Reception and Year One. The children and their teachers travel by minibus to Downsend School to use the indoor pool. They also enjoy a games lesson on the Astroturf pitch that same afternoon.

From Rising Reception onwards, regular outings feature in the timetable to support and further enrich the children’s learning. Outings are normally liked with the theme or topic the children are following that term. Typical visits range from going to the theatre, the local greengrocer, pumpkin picking, Wisley Gardens, an aquatic centre and to The National Gallery. A number of visitors come to our school each term to share their expertise including musicians, Librarians, Community Support Officers, School’s Nurse, storytellers, parents and representatives from school’s charity, Woofability.

School organises themed days, Charity Days, ‘green’ weeks and many events where the whole family is invited to come along too. Typically, these events include having breakfast together in Harvest Week, inviting a relative to lunch in spring and our Grandparents to tea in the summer.

We offer a variety of After-School Clubs for children in Reception and Year One. Typical Clubs include Football, Puzzle, Rising Stars-dance & drama, Spanish and Yoganory-Yoga through stories.

Downsend Sports Club

The ‘Downsend Sports Club’ for pupils in Reception to Year 2 takes place on Saturday mornings, at Downsend Main Site. Reception and Year 1 sessions will last from 9am-9.45am and Year 2 will take place between 10am and 11am.

Depending on the weather, these sessions will be held on the Astroturf, in the Sports Hall or on the grass pitches at Main Site. Therefore, if pupils could also bring football boots with them, it would be greatly appreciated.

As well as expert coaching, where pupils will learn new skills and enjoy small-sided matches, this will hopefully be a great opportunity for parents to socialise on the side lines whilst enjoying a hot drink, and watching their child start to develop into the future stars of Downsend School.

This is a free service to Downsend pupils that we have no doubt will be enjoyable for parents and pupils alike. The aim would be for the ‘Downsend Sport Club’ to run throughout the school year every Saturday morning, where football will be taught in the Winter terms and Cricket/Rounders in the Summer.

Pupils will be required to wear Downsend sport kit, shin pads and trainers for all these sessions.

The children will be using their imagination to explore a wide range of combined arts and craft skills to create personalised pieces they can be proud of. We will be using the indoor and outdoor environment to enhance the children’s creativity, while giving them the opportunity to express their artistic brilliance. We will be experimenting with different artistic techniques and using a broad range of textures and medium, such as water colour painting and collage materials.
