To enable pupils of all ages and abilities to enjoy becoming confident digital operators, who are capable of using a wide range of resources.
In the Upper School, pupils continue to develop their word processing skills and are introduced to spreadsheets. In the short term, this will help them in school, with the preparation and presentation of their work in other subjects. Long term, these competences will benefit them in their future studies and careers.
However, particularly in Years 7 and 8, it is programming that is the mainstay of the Computing curriculum. In the future, the demand for good programmers will continue to rise and it is in response to those needs that our programs of study have undergone a radical change recently. In addition, there are important wider benefits to be gained from coding for all, including those who have no plans to go on to develop a career in this field.
Programming helps to develop logical thinking and problem-solving skills and also encourages both collaborative and individual study. Not least, it’s also tremendous fun! Pupils experience success on a regular basis and this encourages them to push themselves further. Many of our pupils practise their coding at home and at break time, when the computer suites are available for their use.
An exciting development in Year 8 this year is the introduction of collaborative teaching in technology, which now incorporates computing and programming strategies. This, of course, reflects the wider, ‘adult’ world, where just about every manufactured article, large or small, is designed at some point with the aid of a computer.
Pupils who show a real aptitude for Computing are encouraged to become Digital Leaders. Their role is to encourage and help peers and provide helpful support for staff. Becoming a DL is a valuable addition to any pupil’s CV.
