Maths in the Upper School should be a mini adventure in itself. Our aim within the Maths Department is for our children to experience an enjoyable and supported journey from the start of Year 6 through the pre-tests at 11+, to the end of Year 8 where the children work towards 13+ assessments either for CE, at levels 1,2 or 3, or at Scholarship level.
We encourage our children to develop an enjoyment of Maths through different styles of lessons and activities, both in and out of the classroom. We also aim to help our children fully understand Maths in real life situations.
Lessons are varied and include practical sessions as well as the use of ICT, MyMaths is available throughout the whole school and widely used. In all year groups, we incorporate games, puzzles and maths challenges as well as revisiting and reinforcing many topics in Year 8 in preparation for any formal assessments.
Lessons are sometimes taught as doubles or even triples to allow for exam practice, practical activities and also to allow for the children to become fully immersed in the subject.
The Downsend Maths Department work together to ensure that all of our children grow in confidence with the subject and achieve to the very best of their ability. We hope to inspire confidence, competence and provide the mathematical skills which will help them in future life.
All children in Year 6 have the opportunity to take part in the Primary Maths Challenge and gifted mathematicians are also invited to sit the MENSA tests.
In order to enrich our children’s learning in Maths, they have the opportunity to visit other schools for competitions and challenges as well as taking part in puzzle days and inter-house activities.
