Science

Science is a fast-paced, interactive subject that has a bearing on all aspects of our lives.  Consequently, the Science Department aims to make teaching relevant to the kind of everyday situations children encounter.

Our teachers are passionate about Science in all its forms and we aim to teach enthusiastically to children in a hands-on approach. The department’s teaching is not limited to the laboratories or classrooms, multiple year groups make use of our grounds and various school habitats.  The teaching philosophy is that Science captures the children’s attention, excitement and desire to learn and together with our very experienced lab technician, we hope to bring the Science curriculum to life.

Our Aims

Through the teaching of Science, our children should be given an opportunity to:

  • Develop curiosity, knowledge and understanding of Science in a creative and interactive way.
  • Create an inquisitive learner that enjoys asking ‘why’.
  • Foster a love of Science that they can take with them beyond Downsend.
  • Encourage an independent thinker.
  • Inspire a wonder for the world around them.

Curriculum

Every topic is taught through ‘Working Scientifically’ and based on the 2014 National Curriculum. Our pupils will understand the ‘scientific process’ and how science influences our wider world.

As they move through the school their knowledge and understanding will be extended beyond the National Curriculum by using the ISEB curriculum to teach towards CE, CASE and scholarship papers for selective senior schools.

At Downsend we want to promote the collaborative learning of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths (STEAM). We pay attention to integrating STEAM skills across the curriculum, with a view to inspiring and encouraging pupils to develop their enthusiasm and skills in these areas. Through STEAM, pupils also develop a valuable set of skills including teamwork, independence, reasoning and critical and creative thinking.

Science enrichment is vital to delivering a creative curriculum that provides opportunities for everyone.  Our Clubs programme, trips and curriculum collapse days are tailored to give all pupils the opportunity to develop their love of Science.
