European Day of Languages
Many languages. One connected world.
European Day of Languages was celebrated on 28th September, and at Downsend we marked marking the occasion with opportunities to enjoy languages and discover more about the cultures and people they connect us to. Through shared greetings, student creativity and conversations about the benefits of speaking other languages, our school communit celebrated the value of looking beyond our own experiences.
Every voice, another way to connect
At the Downsend Junior assembly, pupils got the opportunity to say something in a foreign language. It was a chance for everyone to take part; celebrate the languages they know and appreciate the many ways we can communicate with one another.
A colourful celebration of countries and cultures
Pupils created a wing display featuring feathers that represented a diverse range of countries. Available to view, the display offers a striking reminder that our differences enrich our community and that curiosity about the wider world can bring us closer together.
Greetings Hunt
At break and lunch, pupils took part in a “Greetings Hunt”, attempting to locate greetings in 20 different languages. As they searched, they discovered new ways to say hello and explore how a simple greeting can open the door to connection.
Languages in Everyday School Life
A range of colleagues greeted pupils in a foreign language, with some adding other foreign language words into their lessons. These everyday moments bring language learning into school life and show how small opportunities to listen, speak and learn can spark wider interest.
A “Guess Who?” Activity
At break and lunch, pupils will had to find the identity of a range of colleagues from the clues provided in the “Guess Who?” activity. It was a playful opportunity to get curious, share ideas and learn something new about the people in our school community.
Sharing why languages matter
Some pupils were interviewed about the benefits that speaking other languages bring. Their reflections helped highlight how languages can support communication, broaden perspectives and help us engage with people and ideas from around the world.
Learning with an international outlook
These European Day of Languages activities reflect Downsend’s commitment to language learning and international-mindedness. By encouraging students to explore languages, value cultural diversity and consider the benefits of communicating across language barriers, we are building understanding of the wider world.
This work supports Downsend’s application for the Foundation Level of the International School Award, run by the British Council. It represents our ongoing commitment to helping young people become curious, confident global citizens; it does not indicate that the award has already been achieved.
