Welcome to Nursery at Little Downsend
In our Nursery, children join us in First Steps, gently adapting to a new routine, and building strong bonds with teachers and friends. We love to see how quickly children settle in with us, and how they approach each day with genuine excitement.
Although our most important priority in the Nursery is to ensure the children are settled, comfortable, happy, and relaxed, we also provide imaginative ways of building up numeracy and literacy skills; we grow turnips, hatch chickens, and create slippery slopes. We stimulate your child’s curiosity and imagination. During these early years, we work with your child to build their confidence to try anything and everything, we ask questions and create opportunities for children to explore the world around them.
All children have access to an iPad and best-in-class ed-tech apps to support their learning. In March 2022, Little Downsend was delighted to be invited by Microsoft to join the Incubator Pathway of the Showcase Schools Programme. Read more here.
In recognition of our forward-thinking approach, we are delighted to have been shortlisted in the ISA Awards 2021 for Excellence and Innovation in Early Years and Highly Commended in the Muddy Stilettos Best Schools Awards 2022 for ‘Most Creative Learning Through Play’. Read more here.
In First Steps (from age 2), in a playful environment, our children have endless ways of developing their skills without even knowing it is happening. We explore books and language together, we use blocks and loose parts play to understand number, shape, space, and time. Fine motor skills are boosted with creative crafts and physical coordination is always high on the agenda given Downsend’s sporting pedigree!
Our First Steppers are always challenged to test their ‘what comes before…..’ skills, so reading, writing, and numeracy come naturally when they take their next step.
From First Steps to Reception, we are guided by the Early Years Foundation Stage Framework. Our curriculum is built around the seven areas of learning development and is enriched by a structured and intentional approach to the development of specific skills.

In addition to the brilliant basics, even our littlest children benefit from specialist teaching every week. We are delighted to welcome expert teachers in French, Dance, Music and Forest School to give our children dedicated time every week to explore languages, movement, creativity, and the outdoors.
