Head's Welcome

Meet the Head.

Described by the Good Schools Guide as ‘refreshingly candid, with a knack for getting what he wants’, Ian Thorpe has been Head at Downsend for 10 years. A forward-thinking Head, Ian has been responsible for significant change at Downsend.

His can-do attitude, relentless energy and good humour, coupled with an impressive track record from Chinthurst, City of London Freemen's and Caterham School, mean that Downsend benefits from the best of both worlds – the ability to choose the best of the sector, whilst also innovating to do things differently.

FACILITIES & LOCATION

Excellent learning locations.

Innovative modern spaces bring specialist teaching to life at the Main School, while Little Downsend offers a home from home for our littlest children, with outstanding outdoor spaces for exploring and learning.

A new era for Downsend, welcoming babies to the family.

We are delighted to now welcome babies to the Downsend family. Little Downsend Ashtead is proud to provide an exceptional foundation for children aged 6 months to 4 years.

Passionate and inspiring leadership, down to earth, fantastic facilities and a modern, forward-thinking approach.

What helps a young person turn an interest into a real sense of direction?

Confidence doesn’t always arrive all at once. Often it grows through small moments, exploring new interests, finding the right environment, and feeling supported enough to give something a try.

In this short film, Jamie, Year 11 student at Downsend, reflects on how his time at Downsend has helped him to discover a genuine passion for music, build confidence in himself and other students and start thinking about what comes next.

What are the moments in a school day that truly build confidence?

Often, it’s not just the lessons themselves, but the everyday experiences that shape how young people grow.

Working together in lessons, finding time to be creative, supporting eachother and learning to be brave enough to give something new a go.

Guided by our values of Thrive, Innovate and Endeavour, life in Downsend Junior School is designed to help pupils develop independence, curiosity and self-belief that grows through small interactions, shared experiences and the encouragement of a community that knows every child.

This short film captures a real glimpse into that journey - a day that reflects not just what our pupils do, but how they feel, learn and grow along the way.

At Downsend, we believe celebrating language and identity helps our students grow in confidence while strengthening our sense of community.

So to mark tomorrow’s #MotherLanguageDay, we asked some of our bilingual Junior and Senior School students to share their favourite words in their mother tongue.
