Head's Welcome
Meet the Head.
Described by the Good Schools Guide as ‘refreshingly candid, with a knack for getting what he wants’, Ian Thorpe has been Head at Downsend for 10 years. A forward-thinking Head, Ian has been responsible for significant change at Downsend.
His can-do attitude, relentless energy and good humour, coupled with an impressive track record from Chinthurst, City of London Freemen's and Caterham School, mean that Downsend benefits from the best of both worlds – the ability to choose the best of the sector, whilst also innovating to do things differently.

Last week, Downsend Rocks 2026 brought an evening of live music and brilliant performances from our student bands. 🎸
Students took to the stage with confidence and energy, performing a wide range of music across the evening.
A huge thank you to our Music Department staff, technical team and families for helping make the evening such a success, and most importantly, well done to all of the students who performed with such enthusiasm and passion for music.

Happy 100th Birthday, Sir David 🌍
Today at Downsend we celebrated one of the greatest storytellers of our time and asked our students a big question: what legacy do you want to leave?
From his career in broadcasting to the biomes he’s brought into our living rooms, David Attenborough’s story is one of curiosity, purpose and passion. And today, our pupils started writing theirs.
A huge thank you to Shelley Macintyre, whose BBC broadcasting experience and passion for his work inspired the day, and who will be celebrating with Sir David himself at the Royal Albert Hall tonight, armed with a birthday message from our students. 🎬
Time for something a bit different…
Inspired by the SNL Wicked sketch, this is a musical-style glimpse into Downsend - with students and staff from Little Downsend through to Sixth bringing the Downsend journey to life.

Yesterday, 31 of our Year 5 and Year 6 pupils headed to the @natural_history_museum for an out-of-this-world day of coding, engineering and problem-solving.
As part of a workshop created in partnership with the LEGO Group and @raisingrobots , they designed, built and programmed their very own Martian rovers using LEGO®️ Education SPIKE Essential robotics sets, then put them to the test on a realistic Martian surface. 🤖🪐
It was great to see how they collaborated, tested and debugged their way through the challenge. Future engineers and coders in the making! 💫
